More Than Meets the Eye by Roy Johansen and Iris Johansen
This book was full of twists and turns which I will try not to give away. It starts with the FBI being led by serial killer, James Michael Barrett, to the gravesite of one of his victims. Once they got to the location and started digging they hit a metal plate and were hit with a blast from a bomb buried with the body. Did Barrett plant the bomb and commit suicide before being sentenced to the death penalty? Kendra Michaels, FBI consultant, doesn’t think so. She puts her observation skills to the test in this thrilling book where nothing is quite as it seems on the surface.
The book focuses mostly on Kendra’s perspective but occasionally will flip between characters to help tell the full story. I enjoyed the dialogue in this book. I found Kendra’s interactions with those around her to be charming and witty. Kendra’s character is fascinating to me because she can see what everyone else doesn’t but she explains how she got to her conclusions well. I was quite captured by this book and struggled to put it down.
One down side to this book is that there is a lot of phone conversations so there are a lot of “she ended the call,” and “then he disconnected.” I found this to be annoying but was still too interested in the story to care all that much. I will warn for those that don’t want to read romantic scenes, there is about a page or so that is able to be skipped without missing important details in the book. I would still highly recommend it as this is not a main scene or theme of the book.
I would recommend this book to adult readers who are looking for something out of the ordinary and who like thrillers. More Than Meets The Eye is an excellent, thrilling, fiction read but definitely needs the right audience. If you don’t like murder or plot twists, I would steer clear of this read.
Overall I’d give it 4/5 rating.
